Does your inner critic sometimes get the best of you?
Pt. 3: Shirley Valentine on our inner critic & bravery at any age
Reminder: Solo Travel 101 for Women: Move Forward & Thrive is next week!
Before her dream trip to Greece, Shirley Valentine almost calls it off. She suddenly wonders if she’s lost her mind and if going away and leaving her family is a bit self-indulgent. (Anyone relate?)
She almost talks herself out of going … until a friend stops by and serves as the kind of mirror we all need sometimes. (The kind who dares to reflect our own bravery back to us.)
Shirley, like many of us, has a strong inner critic:
Watch to see what it says to her ….
You, going to Greece … what for?
You’re one silly bitch. You’re 42, not 24.
You’re just a stupid woman looking for adventure when the time adventure is over.
Besides the fact that it makes me chuckle that she thinks 42 is old, I’ve had a version of this same conversation with myself.
It’s the version that tells me I’m too old to do something new. Or not experienced enough. Or too afraid. Or not brave enough.
Luckily, a friend interrupts Shirley’s conversation with her inner critic to remind her of the agency she has in changing her own life.
That conversation reminds Shirley of her own bravery. And it gives her the courage to do something completely out of her comfort zone.
Shirley then says (at 1:33):
From now on, when I look in the mirror, I’m not gonna say, “Christ, you’re 42.”
I’m gonna say, “Hey Shirley, you’re only 42.
Isn’t that marvelous?”
And just like that, she decided to go to Greece after all.
Would you like to borrow some bravery from other women too?
Come join a group of like-minded women looking to do the same!
